Mid-Century Modern Meets Industrial In Lambert & Fils Lighting, Montréal

As an interior decorator, I am always on the hunt for dramatic lighting that stands out and takes centre-stage. Whether the style of the light fixtures is luxe and grand or purely minimal, there has to be something unique and different about the lighting in a room.

Founded in 2010 by Samuel Lambert, Lambert & Fils is a Montréal based lighting design studio that has captured my attention with its very unusual aesthetic. By mixing Mid-Century Modern and Bauhaus industrial influences, plus a tiny sprinkle of Art Deco thrown into the mix, a new breed of lighting is born!

For most people, the term 'industrial design' generally brings to mind visions of clunky, heavy objects. However, Lambert et Fils has taken industrial and catapulted it into a new category. These light forms are refined and elegant. By referencing the sleek lines of Mid-Century Modern and sourcing the materials typically used in industrial, the output is spectacular.

Below, a hanging fixture from the Laurent Collection, which is more of a nod to Art Deco. Lambert & Fils is committed to working with skilled trades in Quebec and this piece is made by a local glass blower. The suspension of wires and anchors allows the pendant to be 2 things at once, a simple orb, yet also something that is also complex. As with most Lambert & Fils products, there are a variety of finishes offered including polished brass, powder coated aluminum and nickel plated steel.

Custom finishes are also available. This fixture only comes with LED lights.

Lambert & Fils is for those seeking luxury lighting with an edgy appeal. This is über-chic industrial lighting, without the drab and rough quality finishes normally found in industrial design products.

Below is the Beaubien Three Positions, an excellent example of Lambert et Fils' skill in conceptualizing an industrial cum modern fixture where the final result displays slender, gently curved lines and an exquisite attention to detail. This particular fixture is highly versatile and can be used as a suspension, wall mount or floor lamp. The Beaubien is an excellent option for making a decorative statement or for lighting an area where ceiling fixtures are difficult to install (homes over 70 years old). Note the absolute perfection of the finishing with just a touch of brass to elevate the piece to the highest heights of quality. The finish is only available in a black matte powdercoat with the option of LED or halogen lights.

The Dot Line series comes in a suspension, wall mount, and floor lamp. All 3 versions are quite simple yet exude a strong presence with their long, lean line and unfinished brass. Below, the suspension could work equally well above an Island in a kitchen or as the main pendant in a living area. Multiple pendants can be hung in symmetric or crazy configurations. Available in LED or halogen.

Available in black graphite or unfinished brass, the Perchoir (meaning "perch") is not a pendant you see everyday. It almost resembles the hanging perch that can be found in a bird cage (the bird cage reference is having an interior design 'moment' so this is definitely au courant). Note the brass combined with the black wire suspension. Loving the Art Deco-ish black and brass combo! Available in unfinished brass and black matte powdercoat.

The Clark Table lamp is truly a stunning item to place on either side of a bed or sofa tables. This style of lamp works well in a true Modern décor environment. The marble on the base is a distinctly creative touch that Lambert & Fils are known for incorporating into all their products. The thinner form of the frame and the cutout feature on the solid shade (which allows more light to shine through) is also a curve ball away from the standard table lamp. Available in 3 finishes: unfinished brass; matte black powdercoat; and matte white powdercoat.

Leonardo Da Vinci famously said, "Of the original phenomena, light is the most enthralling." The products made by Lambert & Fils definitely succeed in enthralling us with new ways of seeing and appreciating lighting as an art form. This proudly Canadian studio is a bold inventor in the design world and one to be watched as it sets a new path for the future of light forms.

Lambert et Fils is available through stockists across Canada and internationally.
