Your furniture and walls aren't boring, so why should your floors be ho-hum? That's the philosophy behind Watson Soule, made up of a dynamic duo of two artists who design and produce highly imaginative and "visually expressive" rugs.

Their studio, located in the downtown Toronto design district, produces original works of art that could easily pass as paintings. They have two collections entitled Twofold and Undertones, and the good news? They offer the option of working with the studio to create bespoke pieces crafted specifically for a space.

As the name implies, rugs from the Twofold collection are dual sided. The obvious advantage of having two different designs on command is the option to majorly switch up your  décor without having to spend more money. Below, the Twofold collection's "Wild Flowers" double sided rug that is hand tufted and flat woven from New Zealand wool. 

This dual personality beauty caters to both your abstract boho chic and classic design sides. Imagine either side covering your floor space! 

This double sided rug is titled "Places" and appears to resemble a map. It has a very calming, earth-toned aesthetic, perfectly neutral and suitable for most colour schemes. Wouldn't you enjoy coming home and relaxing with this gentle and refined companion lying at your feet? Hand tufted and flat woven from wool.

The Undertones collection uses bolder colours and designs that highlight texture. Undertones rugs are "rebellious but refined", as stated on the Watson Joule website. Below, the "Heartbeats" rug is made from wool and cotton and is hand tufted and loop pile. The pattern does have some resemblance to the rhythm of a heartbeat printed on an ECG.

Below, a rug named "Out of Line" mimics a simple modernesque painting with black strokes and one red accent on a white canvas. Made from wool and cotton in a hand tufted loop pile, and also from the Undertones collection.

The creative duo behind Watson Soule is Janna Watson, an emerging artist, and Nico Soule, a multi-talented designer, who joined forces in 2012. Here, they are working on "Fools Gold", from the Undertones collection. All rugs are conceived and hand made in the Watson Soule studio at 401 Richmond Street West.
